York Minster Engineering Football League – Division Two
FT: Strensall 7 – 5 Cliffe FC
Cliffe FC find themselves on the wrong end of a result in a mess of a game, Strensall beating Cliffe FC 7 goals to 5.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
The fixture was fortunate to go ahead as the pitch condition was very poor due to this week’s heavy rainfall, resulting in a less than ideal playing surface. Strensall struck first in what would be a 12-goal fixture, taking the lead from close range after the ball broke in the box, 1-0. Cliffe drew level, Paul Tanton smashing the ball past a crowd of players into the goal via a deflection, 1-1. A Luke Crowther free-kick evaded everyone and the ‘keeper had no chance as Cliffe pulled 2-1 ahead. Strensall replied with a special free-kick of their own, the ball ending up in the top corner, 2-2. Strensall took a 3-2 lead but the score read 3-3 at the interval when Ben Rawson pounced on a ‘keeping error to head the ball neatly into the goal.
The goals continued to flow after the break as Strensall scored twice more, one or both of the goals looking offside, to make the score 5-3. Chris Harkin was chopped down in the area and he stepped up and scored the spot-kick, twice in-fact as a re-take was required for Darren Jackson’s eager encrouchment, to make the score 5-4. Strensall restored their two goal cushion, Dave Reasbeck tripping a Strensall player in the area, Jamie Hawksworth saved the spot-kick but the hosts scored the follow up, 6-4. Chris Harkin scored a second penalty after Dave Heron was fouled in the area, 5-6, but Strensall scored another before the final whistle to make the final score 7-5.
A poor performance with little positives to draw from the game apart from the performance of man-of-the-match Darren Jackson and a select few other in a Cliffe shirt. To score 5 goals away from home and lose is a bitter pill to swallow for Keith Tiplady and his side in Wednesday evening’s frustrating circumstances. Cliffe FC have two remaining league fixtures left this season, both against the newly crowned Division Two champions Church Fenton White Horse; this Saturday @ The Bowling Green & this coming Monday @ Church Fenton.
