A late Andy Kirkham goal adds to Dave Reasbeck’s opener to see Cliffe FC edge past Thorpe United 2-goals-to-1.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

After their 2-1 win, Keith Tiplady said;

“Close game, deservedly decided in the favour of Cliffe FC by a great Kirkham strike. Scrappy game, right result.”

It took 26 minutes for scoring to be opened when a Tom Hogg cross ended at the feet of Dave Reasbeck to tap into the gaping goal, 1-0 to Cliffe FC. Contrary to what may have been expected of the game by some parties, given the scenes from the previous meeting, the match was played in a fair and competitive spirit. A less than ideal ending to the first half saw Adam Durnin once again having to leave the field due to injury, this time with a suspected dislocated shoulder after an awkward collision and fall. – Durnin had to go straight to York Hospital for treatment and no word as yet of his diagnosis, but everyone at Cliffe FC wishes him a speedy recovery – Andy Kirkham replaced Durnin and the away side went into half-time 1-0 ahead.

An awful start to the second half as Thorpe caught Cliffe cold and equalised with a neatly placed effort into the bottom corner, 1-1. Keith Tiplady was forced into making another change when Dale Huntington went down in agony after taking a free-kick and looks likely he’ll be out for a few weeks with a groin injury. Alan Jackson replaced Huntington straight-swap to fit in at centre-back. With just over 10 minutes to go, Tom Hogg had a one-on-one brilliantly saved by Thorpe’s ‘keeper and with the away side’s next attack a Thorpe clearance dropped at the feet of Andy Kirkham on the edge of the box; Kirkham emphatically hammering the ball through the crowd of players and into the bottom corner, 2-1. Cliffe FC saw out the final moments and ran out 2-1 winners.
