Cliffe FC suffer their second league loss of the season in another disappointing display, losing 4-2 in a local derby against Thorpe United.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

“Another disappointing display. Another game that should of yielded more. I think people will forget or ignore that at 3-2 we had a hat-full of chances. However, it’s converting them that counts. Again, must improve.”

~ Keith Tiplady, 7th October 2012.

Thorpe opened scoring on the 8th minute mark, a lucky break leading to a one-on-one which was converted to put the home side ahead, 1-0. A set of Cliffe FC chances went begging before the away side levelled, a pass-back on the penalty spot lead to and indirect free-kick that lead to Tom Hogg poaching his effort from close range, 1-1. Thorpe retook the lead before half-time when Cliffe failed to clear their lines leading to the Thorpe #9 grabbing his second of the match, 2-1 HT.

Frustratingly, Cliffe couldn’t seem to get going which flattered Thorpe performance and soon the home side had a third, a neat finish into the top corner to make it 3-1. Cliffe had opportunities to level up after a powerful header from a corner, Hogg heading the ball into the roof of the net made it 3-2 and chances fell to Crowther, Nathan Horner and a set of Cliffe corners came and went as the equaliser was sought after. With Cliffe switching to three up-front in search of a goal it left them liable to the counter and Thorpe sealed things with a solo run that ended up in the back of the net and make the final score 4-2.

A poor performance, display and result from the Cliffe ranks. But a huge result for all connected to Thorpe United Football Club, who move up to 4th place whilst Cliffe FC drop to 6th in York League Division Two table after four games.
