Cliffe FC retain the B&P Sports Cup on penalties against Thorpe United, the score 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

“A good test for the (Cliffe FC) squad’s depth with so many players absent. I thought we showed good discipline and persistence. Nice to retain the B&P Sports Cup too and see a winning penalty shoot-out!”

An even first 30 minutes saw both sides have their fair share of possession and Cliffe did have the ball in the net, Lee Carter’s effort only to be ruled offside. A rush of blood on the 39th minute saw Thorpe reduced to 10-men for violent conduct but this galvanised them for the final minutes of the half and Thorpe lead at the interval, scoring in the last minute of the half, HT 0-1.

Cliffe persisted with their efforts and drew level 12 minutes into the second half, Carter pouncing on a loose ball to side-step the ‘keeper and slot the ball into the empty net, 1-1. With Cliffe searching for a winner, Thorpe still posed a threat on the counter. With 90 minutes played the game went straight to penalties. Ally Harris and Adam Durnin were heroes of the shoot-out, Harris saving a penalty to give Cliffe the advantage and Durnin calmly slotting home the winning penalty to retain the B&P Sports Cup for the Oxen Lane side. Man-of-the-match was Captain Kev Taylor.
