York Minster Engineering Football League – Reserve D
FT: Crayke Reserves 0 – 1 Cliffe FC Reserves
Cliffe FC Reserves hand Crayke Reserves their first defeat of the season, in a great effort by all Dave Hebson’s squad.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
“The lads have been really up for this game all week. They started so strong I don’t think Crayke knew what hit them and to then have a bit if bad luck with the sending off (and penalty award) however not only beat an unbeaten top of the table side but dominate the game in the manner they was incredibly impressive. That’s the level we are capable of, we need to keep at that level now. All credit to the 14 lads today they were absolutely outstanding.”
~ Dave Hebson, 9th February 2013
A positive start for the away side (in Cliffe’s return to the scene of Crayke’s November cup upset) was turned upside down when Nathan Parker was shown a straight red for a reckless challenge which reduced Cliffe Reserves to 10-men. Crayke were then awarded a penalty after Nathan Horner handled the ball in the six-yard box, however Cliffe were galvanised when ‘keeper Ally Harris saved the penalty and within minutes of the penalty Cliffe were ahead – a Marc Brown cross converted by a Crayke defender to put the league leaders behind. Nigel Horner did a great job finding himself as the sole striker for the remaining half-hour of the first half, 0-1 at the interval.
Cliffe’s hard work continued second half and Crayke’s extra man didn’t really show until later on in the half as the home side cranked up the pressure. Harris wasn’t called into action much apart from acting sweeper and Cliffe did have a couple of half-chances to extend the lead. Hebson made good use of all his substitutes to counteract the effect of Crayke’s extra man and with some important defending from Horner and important blocks from Matthew Birch, Cliffe deservedly collected all three points and avenged the club’s November cup defeat. Rich Taylor was awarded man-of-the-match for his competent and battling centre-mid display, FT 0-1.
Cliffe FC First Team were victims of the weather once again, a waterlogged pitch at Strensall this time round – Next week they travel to face Heslington as they look to kick-start a revival to their Division Two campaign. Cliffe FC Reserves will look to build upon their winning performance at Crayke as they face Huby Utd Reserves – venue TBC.
