Cliffe FC Reserves go through to the next round of the York League Reserve Cup competition with a 4-1 dispatch of F1 Racing Reserves, Toby Bodycombe grabbing a hat-trick in the process.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

“We felt we owed F1 one after conceding such a late equaliser in the league fixture and the lads went out and dominated the opening 30 minutes, didn’t allow F1 any time on the ball and moved it quickly when we had it. After going 2-0 up the tie never looked in doubt. Great to see them play with such confidence and togetherness.”

The bright start by the home side saw Toby Bodycombe open the scoring, nipping in ahead of the ‘keeper to head Cliffe into the lead, 1-0. One for the dubious goals panel followed – A Jay Grundy cross ended up in the net with Nigel Horner claiming the goal, whilst Grundy is adamant the ball was over the line before Horner’s touch – either way Cliffe extended the lead, 2-0. Tom Dunning continued to excel in the middle of the park and Matt Birch’s commandment of the back-four is growing week on week. The half-time score did read 2-1 at the interval – the same player that scored the late equaliser a few weeks ago poked the ball home from close range – 2-1 HT.

Cliffe’s looked for more goals in the second half and had it not been for some decent saves from Ally Harris, F1 could have been ahead in the tie. F1 rued their wasted opportunities when Bodycombe made it 3-1 with a neat finish, 3-1. Bodycombe rounded off the tie and completed his man-of-the-match performance with a cool finish in to complete his hat-trick, 4-1 FT.

Another good performance from Dave Hebson’s men, who are on a decent run of form and look better and better every week. Cliffe FC Reserves face Wheldrake in League competition next weekend.
