East Riding County FA – Qualifying Cup 1st Round
FT: Cliffe FC Reserves 0 – 3 Market Weighton
Cliffe FC Reserves crash out of the East Riding County Cup after losing a game they really should have won.
Simeon Leach writes…
The Cliffe team had a young look to it with six of the fourteen man squad being 16-year-olds, but they settled quickest and had an early chance to score when awarded a penalty for handball. Nathan Horner took the kick and smashed it against the bar setting the tone for the rest of the game.
The rest of the half was scoreless; with Market Weighton looking dangerous through their speedy number 15, the same player also causing problems with his long throws. However Cliffe looked relatively comfortable, with the main concern being the lack of quality in the passing and resorting to the hopeful long ball on too many occasions. HT: 0-0.
The second half started with Cliffe in ascendancy again and they really should have taken the lead when Joe White hit the post and then appeared to somehow clear his own shot off the line.
It was all Cliffe now, but as often happens they were caught on the break and Market Weighton snatched the lead. The match then became a succession of squandered chances by Cliffe and some good saves by the away keeper.
Nigel Horner was clean through had his first shot saved and rolled the second agonisingly wide. Joe White was denied again, before Jack Brocklebank rattled the bar with a 25 yard rocket and Tom Grundy hit the post with the follow up.
It was one of those days where Cliffe could be playing now and weren’t going to score and as they threw more men forward in the last 10 minutes were twice caught out on the break to give the Market Weighton want seemed score wise a very convincing victory. FT: 0-3.
