David Hebson writes…

“We were good value for the victory and played really well in patches, if we can take that forward and make 90 mins of the better football we’ll be really dangerous. Credit to the players for working so hard and special thanks to Nigel Horner for helping us out by going in goal!”

Lacking a recognised keeper Cliffe FC Reserves had to rely on Nigel Horner stepping up to the plate. A strong start led to heavy Cliffe possession in Rufforth’s half of the field for the first 15 minutess but a slight lack of composure in the final third led to a lack of clear chances, although Simon Houlder had a couple of decent half efforts on the turn and Jay Grundy blazed just over from distance. Against the run of play Cliffe conceded after an unfortunate spill from stand in keeper Horner presented Rufforth with an open net, 0-1. The Cliffe response was impressive with Ryan Sedman driving at the Rufforth defence. Houlder held the ball up well before smart play between Grundy and Joe White presented white with an opportunity to equalise, which White took well, 1-1 HT.

One-a-piece at half time and Cliffe in the ascendency soon became 2-1 after David Lees caught the Rufforth defence napping after appealing for a marginal offside, Lees rounded the keeper and slotted home, 2-1. The third came from a lovely passing move from Cliffe to put Houlder through before he placed a lively chip beyond the keeper, 3-1. Cliffe hit their fourth after Sedman played a beautiful 40-yard through ball into a great run from Tom Grundy who hit a low cross into Houlder at the back post, Houlder composed himself before predictably finding the back of the net, 4-1. Cliffe then sensing the game was won switched off a little in the final 15 and Rufforth saw more of the ball while Cliffe became ragged and out of shape, culminating in Rufforth opening up the Cliffe back four with a nice through ball that made it 4-2 at the final whistle, 4-2 FT.
