Cliffe FC 2ndXI vs. Wheldrake Reserves (H) 12th October 2013

York Minster Engineering Football League – Reserve D
HT: 3-1
FT: Cliffe FC Reserves 6 – 2 Wheldrake Reserves

Cliffe FC Reserves maintained their 100% league record with a convincing win over Wheldrake at Oxen Lane.
Simeon Leach writes…

“It was a great performance for the 1st 30 mins then we dropped off a bit and started to panick at 3 nil up. Plenty of credit to Wheldrake, they worked hard and applied pressure to us. We regrouped well at half time and the score line ended up being comfortable after we had a wobble at the end of the 1st half. Every single player had a good game today but we need to repeat the level if performance for a full 90 mins next week. 100% start continues and we want to keep it going week after week, only hard work will keep it going and bring success.”

As with last week’s cup performance there was some great build up play from Cliffe, the difference this week being they took their chances and were 3-0 up after 20 minutes. Joe White scored the first with a well directed header and birthday boy Ryan Sutherland then chipped in with a couple of neat finishes.
Cliffe were still well on top although their passing had dropped off a bit. However just before half time Wheldrake took advantage of a couple of slip ups in the Cliffe defence to pull a goal back and leave the half time score 3-1. HT: 3-1

Cliffe were still well on top after the break, but in a rerun of last week the ball just wouldn’t go in the net due to a combination of great goalkeeping, last gasp defending and numerous close shaves including hitting the woodwork.
When Wheldrake got a corner from one of their rare breaks up field and thumped in a header to make it 3-2 it looked like things could get close. However Cliffe upped the pace again in the last 20 minutes and scored further goals through Gareth Anderton, on his debut, Tom “the real goals” Grundy and Sean Gallagher curling a 20 yard effort in to the top corner, to put a more realistic gloss on the score. FT: 6-2
