York Minster Engineering Football League – Division Two
FT: Cliffe FC 3 – 0 Fulford
Three second half goals from Kirkham, Carter and Hogg secure three important points for Cliffe FC against Division Two pace-setters Fulford.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
“A return to form. An impressive display against a fancied opponent. Every member of the (Cliffe FC) squad deserves credit for a great performance.”
~ Keith Tiplady, 24th February 2013.
A competitive opening half saw Cliffe have the most of the chances, Tom Hogg hitting the post from inside the six-yard-box from a header at a very tight angle also the returning Wes Pears and Andy Kirkham came close to opening scoring. Fulford also hit the woodwork, a long-range free-kick crashing against the inside of the post and away. As per last weekend, Cliffe’s first half performance was decent but the half-time score remained goalless, 0-0 HT.
An “réal” nice move opened scoring for Cliffe early in the second-half after a pass from Hogg was controlled and lofted into the net by Kirkham, 1-0. Cliffe’s urgency began to peak along with their hard work, and it began to pay dividends as the home team continued to be the better side going forward whilst and defend well. Cliffe doubled their lead – Lee Carter pouncing onto a high bouncing ball to calmly finish, 2-0. Ten minutes after Cliffe’s second, their third arrived – A Rueben Pearce pass that Hogg ran onto, rounding the ‘keeper and slotting the ball past the defenders on the line, 3-0. Fulford switched to three at the back in the final minutes but Cliffe sealed all three points in an impressive display, 3-0 FT. Ian Beckram was awarded man-of-the-match for his confident display, although he was pushed close by Andy Kirkham who’s form is ever-growing in recent weeks.
This result sees Cliffe FC lift themselves off the foot of the Division Two table, which still remains the most competitive division in this season’s York League. Keith Tiplady’s side are without a competitive game next weekend but return to action on the 9th March vs. Elvington Harriers in League Cup and then return to League action on 16th March away to Strensall.
