York Minster Engineering Football League – Division Two
FT: Cliffe FC 1 – 2 Tadcaster Magnets
Cliffe FC suffer a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hand of Tadcaster Magnets who scrape all three points in a competitive York League fixture.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
“Credit to Tadcaster, they were the best side we’ve faced this season. They were clever and talked well. We had few failings on the night but still deserved more from the game perhaps. It’s disappointing that we came away with nothing.”
~ Keith Tiplady, 8th April 2013.
A goalless first half did see Magnets have the ball in the net in the first minute from a deflected shot but ruled out for a foul. Magnets seeking a win to improve their promotion chances started with a lot of pressure but the Cliffe defence managed to soak up a lot of pressure at the back as the home side came into the game more and more offensively leading up to the break as the close game developed. 0-0 HT.
The first incident of the second half saw Lee Carter defined as obstructed in the penalty area, so an indirect free-kick was awarded as the chance came and went. However, the deadlock was broken early in the second half, the ball breaking to Wes Pears in the box who calmly picked his spot and prodded the ball into the bottom corner, 1-0. Cliffe pushed for more and Chris Jackson also came close, his effort crashing against the inside of the post and Kev Taylor having a shot saved neatly by the ‘keeper. With not long left of the 90 minutes, Magnets scored an equaliser from a looping free-kick that ended up in the roof of the net, 1-1. Promotion-chasing Magnets’ travelling contingent was then sent into raptures with a neatly taken goal that flew into the bottom corner, 1-2. Cliffe thought they should have had a chance to equalise from the penalty spot in the final minutes when Tom Hogg looked to have been fouled in the area but again a free-kick awarded this time outside the area.
The final score read 2-1 to the away side who snatch all three point in a close and competitive match that summarises this season’s York League Division Two nature.
