Cliffe FC Reserves close their York League Reserve D campaign with a 3-3 away draw at Bishop Wilton, Tom Dunning, Simeon Leach and Nigel Horner with the goals.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

“Some of our younger players showed real maturity in their performances, some of our older players were not so mature. I’m thinking about Nathan Horner’s very avoidable red card and Simeon Leach’s ridiculous attempt at an overhead kick, never sensible for someone of his advancing years! Draw was a fair result in the end.”

~ David Hebson, 10th April 2014.

Having confirmed second-place in their previous League fixture they travelled to face Bishop Wilton. Manager David Hebson named Nigel Horner as skipper for the day, in honour of his 21st Birthday. Cliffe looked the better of the two sides, but it took three great Ally Harris saves in the first half to keep the away side in the game. Failure to clear the ball saw Bishop Wilton take the lead near the half-hour mark, 1-0. Tom Dunning began to show the form that saw him impress last season for Cliffe Reserves and it was Dunning’s solo effort, dribbling past numerous Wilton player to slam home an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, 1-1 HT.

Soon in the second-half Cliffe were down to 10-men, Nathan Horner shown a straight red after venting his frustration at the referee verbally. If anything Cliffe’s performance picked up and they looked likely to score the next goal, which eventually came from an unlikely source, Simeon Leach’s heading the ball over the line to put the away side ahead 1-2, Simeon Leach’s first league goal of the season. Wilton made their extra-man count moments after and equalised, 2-2. Again, Cliffe responded and top scorer, Nigel Horner slotted home his first proper chance of the game, his fifth goal in three games, 2-3. The final score read 3-3 though when Graeme Rose was punished for diving in on the edge of the box, the referee awarding a penalty that was converted, 3-3 FT.

Cliffe FC Reserves final match of the season is this Saturday when they travel to face Rufforth United in the Reserve D Supplementary Cup.
