Cliffe FC 2ndXI vs. Bishop Wilton Reserves (H) 29th March 2014

York Minster Engineering Football League – Reserve D Supplementary Cup
HT: 2-0
FT: Cliffe FC Reserves 3 – 2 Bishop Wilton Reserves

Cliffe FC Reserves completed their home fixtures for the season with a 3-2 win against Bishop Wilton.
Hugo Delgado writes…

“We made hard work of it and let our standards slip today. We got over the line thanks to some brilliance from Nigel Horner but if we’re going to be successfull next year in a higher division we’ll have to improve.”

~ Dave Hebson, 30th March 2014.

Cliffe started the contest trying to force their attacking okay in what some seemed to think would be a more one sided contest, the result was simply to leave big spaces in the middle of the park that Wilton exploited well. Following a formation change that saw Nigel Horner move wide and the ever impressive Nath Leach move into the centre of midfield Cliffe began to boss the game and Ben Rawson able to go close from a number of half chances. The opening goal finally arrived when Horner crossed for Rawson to head home 1-0. Cliffe then doubled their lead when Nigel Horner, by now revelling in his wide role, hit a spectacular shot from wide of the area to beat the keeper for 2-0, HT.

The second half saw Cliffe have a number of chances to close the game out but not take any if them. Some of the laces play from the first half began to creep back in and Wilton deservedly pulled one back for 2-1. This was the prompt for some heavy Wilton pressure that saw manager Hebson forced to enter the play himself to bolster the midfield. Cliffe began to reassertion themselves and Nigel Horner then scored a second wonder goal in as many weeks, jinking past four Wilton defenders before beating the keeper from close range, 3-1. Wilton got a second with only 1 minute left in the clock but Cliffe were able to close out a thoroughly entertaining game, 3-2 FT.
