Saturday 20th December 2014
York Minster Engineering Football League – Division One
HT: 4-0
FT: Pocklington Town 4 – 0 Cliffe FC

After back-to-back wins, Cliffe FC 1stXI failed to make it three wins on the bounce as Pocklington Town get their first win of the season, the home side winning 4-0 with all four goals coming in the first half.

Cliffe set up in similar fashion to how they beat Pocklington back in October, but Saturday’s 4-3-3 formation just didn’t effect the game as desired – Pocklington pouncing on a short back pass to open scoring with a neat chipped finish, 0-1. Pocklington quickly got themselves into a 2-0 lead before Cliffe’s best spell of the first half arrived, chances came and went for Bayley Smirthwaite and Jack Dinnewell before the home side then got a third goal for 3-0 and then made it 4-0 before the break, the game effectively over at half-time, HT.

Cliffe reshaped themselves back to a more familiar formation and style of play and a much improved second half ensued for the away side, Reuben Pearse lead by example and earned himself a deserved man-of-the-match whilst Dave Laverack in the Cliffe goal impressed and made some vital interceptions to give his side a slither of hope, Kev Taylor also had a decent second-half in his usual right-wing position. Pocklington wasted a chance to go further ahead whilst Cliffe had a few half-chances come and go, 4-0 was the final score.

Cliffe FC’s 2015 begins in testing fashion for Keith Tiplady’s side with away journeys to Brooklyn (3rd Jan) and then league leaders F1 Racing (10th Jan).

Saturday 20th December 2014
York Minster Engineering Football League – Reserve C
FT: Cliffe FC Reserves 0 – 2 Tockwith FC Reserves

Cliffe FC Reserves are handed a third defeat at the hands of Tockwith this season, Tockwith beating an under-strength Cliffe Reserves side 2-0.

Not much to report with this fixture, Cliffe FC Reserves beginning and ending the fixture with 10-men and having defended well for a majority of the match, came away with a respectable 2-0 defeat considering the circumstances. Nick Pulleyne earned himself Cliffe man-of-the-match.

Cliffe FC Reserves will be looking to improve going into 2015 and begin the new year with the visit of Hamilton Panthers on 10th January.

Sunday 21st December 2014
YSML Football League – Division Three
HT: 0-2
FT: York Phoenix 1 – 5 Cliffe FC Sunday

Cliffe FC will see their club name top one table at least this festive period, the Sunday side signing off 2014 with a dominant 5-1 away win at York Phoenix in YSML Division Three.

Cliffe did well to adjust to the conditions of the pitch and whilst they had to be patient, the away side took the lead when Ryan Sutherland broke down the left wing and finished to make it 0-1. Cliffe dominated the proceedings without racing ahead and needed another goal to settle themselves, Sutherland again popped up on the left wing to make it 2-0 at the half-time break, HT.

Second half saw Luke Durham come into his own and dominate the proceedings, eventually claiming all five assists for Cliffe’s goals – earning himself man-of-the-match. Goals from Jackson Lucitt, a trademark Tom Hogg header, and a Jack Dinnewell goal completing Cliffe’s scoring – Dinnewell’s goal with a unorthodox assist from Durham. Phoenix snatched a consolation goal via a corner kick and the final score read 5-1.

Cliffe FC Sunday side will top the YSML Division Three table over the festive period and will be battling to keep that spot in the new year. Cliffe FC Sundays are scheduled to begin 2015 at home to Selby Olympia on the 4th January before facing Thorpe United’s Sunday side on the 11th January.
