York Minster Engineering Football League – Division One
FT: York St John’s University 6 – 2 Cliffe FC
Cliffe travelled to York St Johns with a youthful squad and sadly came away nothing. It took the hosts ten minutes to open the scoring when they reacted quickest to loose ball in the box, 1-0. Cliffe responded well to this and after a good spell of pressure Tom Hogg equalised with a powerful header from a Tom Robinson corner, 1-1. Both sides had chances to take the lead but all the drama came in the last 90 seconds of the half, a moment of inexperience forced Darren Jackson into having to make a committed challenge out of position and Cliffe’s inexperience showed further as several players were caught ball watching leaving the hosts centre forward unmarked to head the students back into the lead, 2-1. The final action of the half saw St Johns ‘keeper caught on the head by Dean Wood chasing down a loose ball resulting in him leaving the field.
A strong half time team talk and lots of enthusiasm turned to dust 90 seconds after the restart when despite several strong tackles the ball just kept breaking for the hosts and they extended their lead to 3-1 with a neat finish. It took Cliffe a while to get going again and the hosts looked to pile the pressure on, a defensive error lead to the fourth and the game looked beyond Cliffe, 4-1. A change of formation to try chase the game looked to have had a quick response when good work by Nathan Leach, Luke Durham and Robinson opened up a little space for Wood who neatly struck the ball home from 20 yards for 4-2. However in chasing the game Cliffe were caught several times in the last few minutes, Dave Laverack performing heroics in the the Cliffe goal but even he was unable to prevent two late goals seeing the hosts close out a 6-2 win.
Cliffe are finding life in division one pretty tough at the moment and perhaps it’s time some players stood up and were counted!

YSML Football League – Division Three
FT: Cliffe FC Sunday 6 – 0 Wentworth
Cliffe’s Sunday Section really wanted to win this week’s game to avenge last weeks poor defeat 3-2 to the same Wentworth side.
The home side started very well with the front two of Tom Hogg and Luke Durham striking fear into the defence every time they went forward. Cliffe soon went 1-nil up when a Durham through ball set up Hogg to score with a tidy finish. A Nigel Horner corner saw Hogg score with his head for 2-nil. Scott Birch then scored his first goal of season, again from a set-piece to make it 3-0.
Goal of the game came when Durham showed great pace to beat his man and whip in a great ball for Hogg to complete his hat-trick, 4-0 HT.
Second half Cliffe started poor an began to get complacent but the opposition didn’t trouble Ally Harris in goal, and the whole back four looked very sharp. Goal number five came when Daniel Richardson scored a goal which was a cross but ended up fooling the goalkeeper, 5-0, and Richardson completed the scoring for a 6-0 final scoreline, FT.
Jackson Lucitt was The New Inn Man-of-the-match and played brilliant for the whole 90 minutes, covering every blade of grass – the Sunday player/manager leading by pure example.
