York Sunday Morning Football League – Division Three
FT: Cliffe FC Sunday 4 – 2 York Wanderers
Cliffe FC Sundays notch their first competitive win with a 4-2 home victory against York Wanderers, with Aaron Lees in caretaker charge.
Hugo Delgado writes…
A textbook disjointed preparation and warm up for any Sunday side eventually saw Cliffe start bright, man of the match Nigel Horner looking sharp throughout. It was Horner who opening scoring, finishing at the second attempt after the ‘keeper had parried his first effort, 1-0. Ryan Tiplady quickly put Cliffe 2-0 ahead, breaking past the defence to prod the ball under the ‘keeper for his second league goal in two league games. Cliffe slacked off during the remaining minutes of the half and eventually let Wanderers snatch two goals to be level at 2-2 at the break.
Aaron Lees delivered his team talk and quickly sent his lads back out for the second half. Cliffe dominated the second half and had the Wanderers defence worried everytime they came forward, it took a free-kick from Tom Grundy to restore Cliffe’s lead – a long range drifting cross eventually ending up in the back of the net for 3-2. Cliffe thought they had a forth, a Tom Ellwood header judged to be saved on the line by the ‘keeper – Ellwood scored later in the match to seal the win and all three points. A vital win to get Cliffe off the mark in a good team performance.
Next Sunday morning they face Highway Warriors in County Cup competition.
