West Riding County F.A. U21 Floodlit League – Eastern
Cliffe FC U21 0-1 Garforth Villa U21
Cliffe FC Under-21s suffered a narrow and probably undeserved defeat when facing Garforth Villa in their latest match on Wednesday evening.
Simeon Leach writes…
After a below par performance in their last outing a 4-1-4-1 formation gave them a much more solid look. Jamie England put in a couple of great early crosses, but generally clear cut chances were at a premium.
The pattern of the game settled into Cliffe trying to play passing football, while Garforth were much more direct helped by the high number of free kicks Cliffe conceded. However the defence, with Joe Dack outstanding and debutant keeper Liam Lawton having a solid game, looked pretty comfortable, while a deep lying Nathan Leach provided an extra layer of protection from midfield. Half-time: 0-0.
Cliffe started the second half slowly and found themselves under increasing pressure, culminating in a Garforth goal when a free kick ricocheted around the box before being fired home.
The first goal was always likely to be pivotal and although Cliffe had a majority of possession and pressure, the equalising goal never really looked like happening and Garforth held on for the win.
Final score: 0-1
Overall a good encouraging performance from what is a young team, with seven of the thirteen players being Under 18s.
The next game is 12th November, against table topping Beeston St. Anthony’s FC.
