Cliffe FC 6 - 1 Bishopthorpe Utd 3May14

Cliffe FC wanted a bright start and whilst the home side looked the better side in the opening exchanges, it took a good 20 or so minutes for Cliffe to open scoring. Chris Jackson punishing a Bishopthorpe error and opening scoring inside the box, 1-0 – a sloppy goal to concede for the away side. From this point Cliffe pushed on and doubled their lead, Kev Taylor cutting in from the left and unleashing a shot past the ‘keeper to make it 2-0 after the half-hour mark. Lee Carter scored five minutes after Taylor, crashing a shot off the underside of the bar (looked like an OG but was awarded to Carter) that made the score 3-0. Cliffe extended their lead to 4-0 before the half-time break, Wes Pears rising above two defenders to head the ball past the ‘keeper, Cliffe were cruising at the break, 4-0 HT.

Cliffe further extended their lead, Jackson breaking past the defence and slotting past the ‘keeper to make it 5-0. Cliffe continued to play some nice football in the strong sunlight, Keith Tiplady shuffled the pack and pushed Hogg into his preferred central striker role, Hogg continuing to cause multiple defensive worries for the home side. Bishopthorpe did grab a goal to make the score 5-1, frustrating for Dave Laverack not to earn a deserved clean sheet. Hogg made the final score 6-1, cutting in from the left, pausing for a moment before curling a placed shot into the far top corner, 6-1 the final score.

This win secures a top two spot for Cliffe FC and confirms their promotion to Division One, their final league game is this coming Wednesday – away to Thorpe United – a win for Cliffe FC will see them win the title.
