FT: Cliffe FC 4 – 2 F1 Racing
Cliffe FC beat F1 Racing 4 goals to 2 – a Chris Jackson brace, Kevin Taylor and Luke Durham completing the scoring for the home side.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Our first half performance was outstanding against F1, a tricky opponent, it was a big game for both teams. Every player gave his all and we got the win we deserved. More tests on the horizon.
~ Keith Tiplady, 9th February 2014.
What was billed as Cliffe FC’s biggest test of the season so far, they welcomed F1 Racing who currently sit second in the York League Division Two table. Again, like last week, and end-to-end wind made for testing conditions and Cliffe had to face the wind in the first half. The centre-half pairing of Kevin Simpson and Tom Hogg defending well in the opening exchanges and Dave Laverack making some important punches from an early set of F1 corners. Luke Durham came close but just enough pressure from the defender saw him put his shot wide as Cliffe began to gain a foothold in the fixture. The opening goal came near the 35 minute mark, Chris Jackson forcing his way past his marker to unleash a left-footed pile-driver past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Seven minutes later Cliffe doubled their lead, Jackson taken out in the area and a penalty awarded – Jackson converted the spot-kick to put Cliffe 2-0 up at the break, HT.
The home side extended their lead, from an uncommon source, a wind-assisted Kevin Taylor corner adjudged to have crossed the line by the referee after a combination of F1 ‘keeper and defender failed to deal with the looping cross, 3-0 – Taylor’s first league goal for two seasons. F1 weren’t going to roll over and accept defeat and reduced the deficit, George Trifan with a poached effort, 3-1. Some more great link-up play between Cliffe’s front two produced the fifth goal of the game, Jackson setting up Durham to slot the ball past the ‘keeper to make it 4-1. F1 replied immediately from the restart, Neil Yeowart with a tap-in, 4-2. Cliffe saw out the final 25 minutes, defending well and not over-committing on the counter to complete a decent win against fellow promotion contenders, 4-2 FT.
