Cliffe FC suffer their second league defeat of the season, a thoroughly bad away-day as a strong Heslington side win 5-1, Simon Houlder with the only Cliffe goal.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

“We were very slow out of the blocks and never really then got out of first gear. Disappointing after the previous week and poor in most departments. Heslington though were strong on the day and worthy winners.”

~ Keith Tiplady, 12th January 2014.

Cliffe began poorly, took time to come into the match, and were lucky not to be behind in the early minutes, Heslington missing an open goal and wasting a set of other chances before they eventually opened scoring on the 26th minute mark, 1-0. Cliffe drew level around ten minutes later, Lee Carter finding Si Houlder at the back post to draw the away side level, 1-1. Heslington lead at the half-time break, a soft goal to concede by Cliffe’s ranks, 2-1 HT.

Cliffe looked lacking in many areas of the pitch and struggled to get going and play in their preferred footballing style on the weathered Heslington pitch. Heslington soon stretched their lead first to 3-1, then to 4-1 as Cliffe began to throw men forward in an attempt to salvage something from the game. A route-one goal from ‘keeper to forward completed Heslington’s scoring to make it 5-1 with around 20 minutes still left. Keith Tiplady made all three of his substitutions but the game was effectively over, the final score read 5-1 at the final whistle.

The New Inn Cliffe FC MOTM: Kevin Taylor.
LRB Trophies Heslington MOTM: Alex Sutherland.

A poor result for Tiplady’s men who have to move on from a underwhelming performance, lots of football still to play – Cliffe FC having played the least games of any side in Division Two.
Their remaining two fixtures in January sees them welcome Strensall to Oxen Lane this coming Saturday (18/1) and then they travel to face Wilberfoss on 25th January.

Cliffe FC Reserves Summary

Wilberfoss raced into a early 0-2 lead before Gareth Anderton made it 1-2 at the break. A special goal from James Grundy made it 2-2 and gave Dave Hebson’s men a glimmer of hope but two more goals from Wilberfoss sealed the points for the York side. Layton Hallam was MOTM.
