Cliffe FC – York Football League Division Two – Runners-Up
Cliffe FC’s league title campaign falls at the final hurdle, suffering a 4-0 away defeat at Thorpe United, the Division Two title going to F1 Racing and Cliffe FC promoted as runners-up.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Just a bridge too far tonight, a huge fixture backlog, suspensions and injuries finally caught us out. Still so much to celebrate and huge thank you to the players, volunteers, supporters and sponsors. Credit to F1 Racing as worthy champions, we look forward to locking horns with them again next season.
~ Keith Tiplady, 7th May 2014.
An even opening exchanges saw the first quarter-hour goal-less with both sides contrasting styles defined early on. Thorpe opened scoring near the 20-minute mark, Dan Mustill breaking free to loft the ball over Ally Harris to make it 1-0, Cliffe’s offside appeals waved away. Cliffe grew into the game but had to settle for a couple of half-chances falling to Chris Jackson and Reuben Pearse, however Thorpe doubled their lead when Mathew Howden drifted in at the back post to head his side into a 2-0 lead on the half-hour mark. Cliffe failed to deal with the long-ball and another ball into the box saw Thorpe extend their lead, Ben Yorke this time heading his side into a 3-0 lead, if anything Thorpe themselves would admit they couldn’t believe the lead they had raced into. The game developed into a more feisty affair with the referee beginning to show yellow cards to both sides. Thorpe’s lead was further extended minutes before the break, Dave Reasbeck finishing off a simple chance to make it 4-0 at the break.
Tiplady made a few tactical changes at the half-time break in search of an early goal but the game failed to open up enough for Cliffe to get themselves back into it, Tom Hogg flashed a headed chance past the wrong side of the post, as did Jackson. Tom Dunning impressed after being introduced from the bench, but the game was too far gone for Cliffe to snatch anything from the game, 4-0 the full-time score.
Thorpe finished their season with this result and took all three points, and in doing so hand the Division Two title to F1 Racing – Cliffe FC settling for the runners-up promotion spot.
