York Minster Engineering Football League – Division One
FT: Cliffe FC 1 – 4 Total Sports United
More lessons learnt for Cliffe FC as they are defeated 4-1 by Total Sports, their second league defeat of the season.
Luke Durham writes…
This was a game Cliffe FC really wanted, and needed, to win. They started off really well against a good organised Total Sports team and created the first real chance as Tom Robinson crossed for the unmarked Tom Hogg who brought a great save from the keeper. All Cliffe’s early pressure came undone from a simple long throw that was flicked on and into the net. Cliffe never gave up and still played their passing game and this led to the equaliser where some good football was played before Robinson crossed in for Hogg, but this time he wasn’t going to miss, and made it 1-1 with a towering header. 1-1 at half-time.
A couple of minutes into second half saw Total Sports score a fortunate goal as one of the lads tried to cross it in but this turned into a shot and went in past the unfortunate Dave Laverack. A couple of minutes after another unfortunate goal from the home side’s point-of-view scored as Total Sports shot and this bounced back of the foot of Nathan Leach into the net for a deflected own goal. Cliffe looked a different team in the second half as they couldn’t muster any real opportunities and Total Sports had most of the possession and made it 4-1 with a through ball before the player dinked it over the ‘keeper into the net. 1-4 FT.
This was simply a game of two halves and Cliffe need to take the positives out of the game into next week an away trip to Mermaid Old Boys in the East Riding County Cup.
Sunday Team Summary
Sunday 5th October 2014
York FA – Junior Sunday Cup – 1st Round
Cliffe FC Sunday 2-3 York Wanderers
Cliffe’s Sunday returned to Cup action once more, but whilst a much improved performance was displayed over last weekend, they were narrowly edged 3-2 by fellow Division Three side York Wanderers – Wanderers avenging the league game from a couple weeks ago.
Wanderers had a 1-0 lead at the break, but goals from Jack Dinnewell and Kieran Dinsdale saw Cliffe lead 2-1 early in the second half. Wanderers pulled off a comeback to snatch the tie 3-2 and eliminate Cliffe from the York FA Sunday Cup – not even a last minute header from ‘keeper was enough, Ally Harris’ header cleared in the closing stages.
