Malcolm Bryce writes…

Described as a low-brow pre-season, Cliffe FC wanted to impose themselves on their opponents in this friendly and a dominant first half performance saw Cliffe lead 5-0 at the break. Si Houlder opened the scoring, Bayley Smirthwaite bagged a nice goal and Alan Jackson completed a hat-trick, the pick of the bunch being his cheeky chipped penalty kick, 5-0 at the break.

Cliffe continued to give little chance to Wheldrake, but Dave Laverack had to make a couple of stops to maintain his clean sheet. Wheldrake’s ‘keeper had a great second half at the other end, saving efforts from Houlder, Alan Jackson and Jackson Lucitt. Houlder even had a penalty saved early in the second half, but the ‘keeper could do nothing about Ryan Sedman’s volley – great technique to volley the ball first time into the roof of the net from outside the box, 6-0 was the final score.
