York Minster Engineering Football League – Reserve C
FT: Cliffe FC Reserves 2 – 3 Selby Olympia Reserves
Cliffe FC’s eventual solo fixture sees the Reserves on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline, Selby Olympia taking all three points.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
With Cliffe FC first team stood up for their Valentine’s league cup date with Hamilton Panthers, Panthers unable to field a side, it was all eyes on Cliffe FC Reserves short trip to Selby Olympia.
Olympia edged the opening exchanges and had a 0-1 lead, a goal emphatically celebrated by the Olympia touch line by all accounts. Cliffe were level at the break, Sean Gallagher pouncing on a rebound to score from close range, 1-1 at the break.
Nathan Horner and Matt Birch marshalled the Cliffe defence well throughout and make some effective defensive decisions to keep it 1-1 during the second half as Cliffe pushed for a goal. Tom Ellwood at the other end of the pitch impressed for Cliffe also, earning himself Man-Of-The-Match. It was Olympia who retook the lead, a ball from the left wing breaking and eventually stroked home into the net for 1-2, a goal against the run of play at that point in the match. Olympia got another goal to extend their lead to 1-3 with not a lot of time left, another breakaway as Cliffe searched for a goal. Nathan Horner powerfully headed in Cliffe’s second to make it 2-3 near the end, but time ran out for Dave Hebson’s men and Olympia took all three points.
Many thanks to Selby Olympia for switching venues and hosting the fixture. (albeit that Oxen Lane ended up being available due to Hamilton Panthers’ non-fulfilment of the cup tie.)
Cliffe FC Sunday side served a free week this weekend and will be back in action next Sunday, away to York Medics.
Cliffe FC Reserves serve a free-week next Saturday (21st Feb), whilst Cliffe FC first team play their rearranged County Cup fixture at Easington.
