This weekend was a tale of league leaders solidifying their respective positions, Cliffe FC beaten 3-0 away at F1 Racing as their travel sickness continues, as Cliffe FC Reserves were overpowered 8-0 by Hamilton Panthers. But Sunday saw Cliffe FC consolidate their top spot in YSML Division Three with a 2-1 away win at Thorpe United.

Saturday 10th January 2015
York Minster Engineering Football League – Division One
HT: 1-0
FT: F1 Racing 3 – 0 Cliffe FC

Cliffe FC, whilst a much improved performance physically and mentally, their away day woes continue as they are handed a 3-0 defeat to league leaders F1 Racing.

Cliffe FC 0 - 3 F1 Racing 10Jan15

As would have been the theme of every match in the region, the windy conditions dominated the fixture from start to finish. The first half saw both teams try to settle in the testing conditions which created an even match with both sides having the same number of clear-cut chances, F1 seemed to have slightly more half-chances but the score remained goalless. Cliffe’s best chance of the half saw Luke Durham slide in Tom Robinson who saw his near post shot blocked to deny the opening goal. The deadlock was broken five minutes before half-time, a ball breaking lose in the Cliffe box to see F1 lead 1-0 at half-time.

Cliffe remained positive after the break and still looked very much in the game, Sean Gallagher flashing a shot narrowly over the bar. Robinson came close a couple more times but already carrying a knock, it became more and more evident during the second interval. F1 were galvanised by a couple of attacking substitutions and just as it felt an equaliser was close, F1 extended their lead to 2-0. F1 completed scoring in later on in the half, a penalty awarded and converted by the home side, the final-score reading 3-0. MOTM: Tom Robinson.

Cliffe can take a set of positives from this match, 3-0 probably not a fair reflection of the game played but Cliffe had their chances. Keith Tiplady and his men have 10 league games left to ensure their Division One survival and next week travel to face St Clements.

Saturday 10th January 2015
York Minster Engineering Football League – Reserve C
HT: 0-4
FT: Cliffe FC Reserves 0 – 8 Hamilton Panthers Reserves

Nothing much to note from a Cliffe FC Reserves point-of-view as they are overpowered by Reserve C leaders Hamilton Panthers 8-0.

Next weekend sees Cliffe Reserves welcome Strensall Reserves to Oxen Lane, Strensall currently occupy the bottom position in Reserve C table – an opportunity for Dave Hebson’s men to look for victory.

Sunday 11th January 2015
YSML Football League – Division Three
HT: 0-2
FT: Thorpe United 1 – 2 Cliffe FC Sunday

Two pieces of brilliance from Luke Durham settled this match in the way of YSML Division Three leaders Cliffe FC.
In tough conditions with the wind it was going to be a game of the two halves and this is how it turned out to be. Cliffe started off very bright and looked very dangerous with Jackson Lucitt, Jack Dinnewell, and Mark Bennett controlling the midfield with Luke Durham scaring Thorpe defence. The first goal came when Bennett sent a through ball to Durham who was fouled in the area and penalty awarded. Durham stepped up and gave ‘keeper no chance, 0-1. The second goal came not long after when Nath Parker hit crossbar and fell to Kieran Dinsdale who crossed it for Durham who threw himself with a brilliant diving header, 0-2 HT.
Second half was a different story with the weather conditions and Thrope had a few chances but still didn’t threaten Cliffe with the defence playing brilliantly. Daniel Richardson came on and Durham sent in a teasing cross which Richardson was yards from connecting. Thorpe scored when a free kick followed by a scramble and the opposition player tapping it home.

Considering the conditions every Cliffe player would be very happy with there performance and this was a great 3 points to start the year with. MOTM: Mark Bennett.
