YSML Football League – Division Three
FT: Marcia Bishopthorpe 1 – 1 Cliffe FC Sunday
It was all eyes on the Cliffe FC Sunday side this weekend, the 1stXI game postponed due to waterlogging at Easington and the Reserves having a free week.
The points are shared in the top-of-the-table clash in YSML Division Three, Cliffe FC Sunday drawing 1-1 at Marcia Bishopthorpe.
Hugo Delgado writes…
“Going away and taking a point from a second place team, four points over two games, shows the strength we have at the club. But I’m concerned we haven’t performed anywhere near as well as we can and title contenders should, moving forward there’ll be a lot of emphasis on getting back to that standard and ridding the players of any complacency before another big fixture against York Medics.”
~ Jackson Lucitt, 8th February 2015.
In what was a game where Cliffe could of moved further in front of second-place Marcia Bishopthorpe with a win, it was also vital they didn’t lose this one to their title rivals. Luke Durham captained the side for the taken ill Mark Bennett. The game wasn’t much of a spectacle with not much happening, the first Cliffe chance came when Durham showed great pace to get to a Aaron Lees pass in the corner and beat the keeper only to see it cleared off the line. Lees also saw a darting header go narrowly over the bar. The breakthrough finally came when the ‘keeper came rushing out to stop Jack Dinnewell, the ball which fell to Durham to whip the ball into the box and Nigel Horner tapped it home for 1-0 at the half-time break.
Second half started with Cliffe missing the chances to go further ahead with the game remaining 1-0. The equaliser came with less than three minutes remaining, Cliffe substitute Ryan Tiplady, who didn’t play his best made a risky challenge in the box which was given as a penalty, Tiplady was lucky to remain on the pitch. The Marcia striker scored from the spot, and the points were shared. Full time 1-1.
Cliffe FC Sunday remain top of YSML Division Three with five fixtures remaining, newly second-placed Thorpe United and now third place Marcia are hot on the heels of Jackson Lucitt’s side. Cliffe FC Sunday have a free week next weekend.
