YSML Football League – Division Three
FT: Cliffe FC Sunday 6 – 0 Thorpe United
Cliffe FC – YSML Division Three – Champions 2014/15
Cliffe FC are crowned YSML Division Three Champions with an emphatic 6-0 Easter-Sunday home win against Thorpe United to both seal the league title, and a 100% home record.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
“I couldn’t be happier with the performance on the day! We were unplayable, even more so than in previous victories. To win the league at home and maintain our 100% home record was really special! Winning this league has been a real club effort from start to finish! We want to end the season with a win at Olympia to round off a superb first season!”
~ Jackson Lucitt, 6th April 2015.
Manager, Jackson Lucitt, having deliberated about his team selection since last Sunday’s 4-0 win against Selby Olympia, picked his squad of 14 and sent his players out wanting a win to seal the title. Even opening exchanges saw the score-line goalless and the home side opened scoring in fortuitous nature, a Luke Durham cross evading everyone in the box including the dumbfounded goalkeeper to loop into the net to put Cliffe 1-0 ahead. Cliffe began to look likely to get more goals from this point and Tom Hogg was denied a few times and Matthew Birch came close to doubling Cliffe’s lead before blazing a shot over. Hogg would have a hand in making Cliffe’s second, sliding the ball into the box and eventually breaking to man-of-the-match Andy Kirkham who finished in calm fashion to make it 2-0 at the break, HT.
A two-goal lead just didn’t quite feel like the game was over and the third goal looked to be vital, and luckily for the Oxen Lane side it went the way of the boys in blue and white, a powerful Nathan Horner header from a Jack Dinnewell corner made it 3-0 and looked the be the straw that broke the camel’s back. To be fair, Thorpe did not give up and Cliffe still had to concentrate to keep a clean sheet – Phil Newstead (the very same that plays for Cliffe first team) looking to be Thorpe’s biggest threat. It soon became 4-0 when that man again, Kirkham, popped up with another long range effort, taking a touch and smashing a thunderbolt past the ‘keeper. Then substitute Nathan Parker got in on the act, scoring a neat header to make it 5-0 and then some excellent work from Durham set Parker up for his second and Cliffe’s sixth to get the title party started, 6-0 the final score.
