HT: 1-2
FT: Cliffe FC Sunday 5 – 3 York Medics

Cliffe FC Sunday side move three points closer to the YSML Division Three title with a 5-3 home win versus York Medics, Tom Hogg grabbing a hat-trick, and Cliffe coming back from 0-2 down.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

Having being beat by the same Medics side a couple weeks ago, Cliffe needed a win to get their title charge back-on-track. The away side though took an early lead, a quick throw from the left wing was crossed into the box and neatly converted to put Medics ahead 0-1. Some lack defending a poor reactions saw Medics double their lead, when two forwards found space in the six-yard-box to put the ball into the net, 0-2 and it all to do for Cliffe. The home side, now playing a 3-5-2 formation needed to get themselves back into the match, and did so with the front-two linking up – Luke Durham crossing for Tom Hogg to head the ball into the gaping goal, 1-2. Cliffe were beginning to run Medics ragged now as they searched for an equaliser, but Medics held onto their lead at the half-time break.

Cliffe still wanted all three points, so a positive reaction was needed after the break, and the equaliser came from Cliffe’s talisman Kevin Taylor – breaking into the box to hammer a right footed shot past the ‘keeper, 2-2. Cliffe then began to run riot with Hogg completeing his hat-trick with a pair of goals within minutes of each other – first he broke the offside trap to calmly put the ball past the ‘keeper for his second goal of the game, 3-2, then Hogg’s presence saw the ‘keeper drop the ball at Hogg’s feet to a open goal, 4-2. The home side having now got into a comfortable winning position may have been guilty of being a bit wasteful in possession by not extending their lead further. Dan Richardson drew a great save from the Medics ‘keeper, diving down to the bottom left corner to deny Richardson. Medics did get a goal back with around 5 minutes to go to setup a nervy finish, 4-3. But Andy Kirkham’s long range thunderbolt with the last kick of the game saw the match finish 5-3, Kirkham hitting a shot from at least 25 yards that flew over the ‘keeper and into the roof of the net.

Cliffe FC Sunday now sit ten points clear at the top of the YSML Division Three table with 34 points with a superior goal difference, two wins from their remaining three game will see them clinch the title.
