YSML Division Two
FT: Cliffe FC Sunday 1 – 4 York Phoenix
Disappointing opening to the York Sunday Morning League season for Cliffe FC Sunday, going down to a 4-1 home defeat to York Phoenix, a poor team performance. Saturday saw Cliffe FC Reserves complete their pre-season schedule, a 4-2 loss against Riccall United Reserves.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
A running theme through-out the pre-season fixtures, of not starting games well, reared it’s head in the opening league fixture as York Phoenix opened scoring within the first five minutes, 0-1. Cliffe eventually got their first shots on target, but Sean Gallagher couldn’t convert and when it looked like the home side might get back into the game, Phoenix scored from a corner-kick – the header evading Ally Harris’ grasp after a slight deflection – 0-2. To compound things further, captain Mark Bennett had to leave the field with an injury before half-time, that remained 0-2 at the break.
The third goal of the game was vital, but it went the way of the away side as Cliffe started the second half like the first – an attacker evading a set of challenges to get a goal seemingly out of nothing, 0-3 – a mountain to climb for Cliffe. Player/manager Jackson Lucitt put himself on the field to add some needed energy in the middle of the park and Cliffe soon had a lifeline – a Keoran Dinsdale corner eventually converted by Nathan Leach, 1-3 with about 20 minutes left. To Phoenix’s credit they knew how to take the the momentum out of Cliffe’s pressure and slowing down restarts from goal-kicks and throw-ins – scoring was complete a few minutes from time as Cliffe seeked more goals and the away side scored another to make the final score 1-4 FT.
Not the ideal start last season’s YSML Division Three champions wanted, but player/manager Jackson Lucitt is keen to move on from this, take the lessons learned and move onto next Sunday’s (13th Sept) away game at Brayton FC.

FT: Cliffe FC Reserves 2 – 4 Riccall United Reserves
Cliffe FC Reserves faced their third opponents in seven days as they welcomed established Reserve A side Riccall United to Oxen Lane.
Cliffe may have ended up on the wrong side of a 4-2 scoreline, but the history books have shown heavy defeats handed out by Riccall so some positives to work with for Cliffe having comeback from 0-4 to finish the game the stronger of the two sides.
Riccall lead the game 2-0 at the break, the second goal the pick of the bunch finding the top corner from outside the box. Riccall went 4-0 up in the second half before Sean Gallagher and Tim Mizen both scored to make it 2-4, Gallagher had a goal chalked off for offside and the Riccall ‘keeper was needed to make a two handed save from a Nigel Horner header – so the game easily could’ve ended up 4-4 – but 2-4 was the FT score.
Cliffe FC would like to thank their kit sponsor Londis for their continued sponsorship, and The New Inn, Cliffe for their continued hospitality.
