With the tie being originally being rescheduled twice for various reason, both clubs (at the advice of the County FA) took the decision to switch venues to Oxen Lane, Cliffe, due to waterlogging at Easington as United took the long trip to the Selby-area.

Keith Tiplady had named a vastly rotated squad compared to recent league matches and was able to give first team débuts to Luke Rayner up top, Harri Summerscales from the bench, and named a father-son combination of Sim Leach and his son Nathan Leach in the Cliffe back-four – and with the combination of Ally Harris making a super double save towards the end of the tie, the father-son team earned a clean sheet too!
The first half was a goalless affair with both sides having chances, Cliffe having the better quality possession, but neither side breaking the deadlock, 0-0 HT.

Cliffe were left slightly frustrated having failed to open scoring in the first half, but a much better second interval followed the half-time break. Reuben Pearse began to dominated the midfield, harrying and harassing in the middle of the park, as Cliffe’s left wing combination of Ryan Tiplady, Tom Robinson, and Luke Durham drifting onto the left quickly became a problem for Easington’s defenders – however the deadlock still remained. A Pearse free-kick that crashed off the bar lead to Cliffe’s opener, the play eventually breaking to substitute Tom Grundy, who’s pile-driven shot flew past the defenders and ‘keeper into the net – a goal worthy of settling any cup tie, 0-1. Cliffe put the tie beyond doubt a few minutes later, another Kevin Taylor assist saw Jack Dinnewell break past the last defender and hammer a shot past the ‘keeper into the roof of the net, a nice goal, 0-2. Cliffe progress the the County Cup quarter-final, 0-2 FT.

Cliffe FC now host Hemingbrough United in the next round, a tie both teams can look forward to – the same tie was drawn back in 2010 – Hemingbrough triumphing in a extended penalty shoot-out on that day.

Next weekend, Cliffe FC return to league action, Tiplady’s men travelling to Total Sports United. Cliffe FC Reserves are also back in action, having served a free weekend this past weekend, and they travel to Rufforth United Reserves.
