York Minster Engineering League – Division One
FT: Cliffe FC 0 – 1 Rawcliffe
Whilst seemingly having the game under control at times, Rawcliffe’s single goal in the first-half sees Cliffe FC lose 1-0 at home.
Malcolm Bryce named a squad he felt could get the result desired, and very much made a statement that places are now up for grabs in the First Team in the coming weeks as he looks to shape a side capable to compete in Division One.
Cliffe started bright and Tom Hogg saw a header crash off the underside of the bar and away, Andy Edwards saw a pair of shots saved – but both Cliffe forwards found themselves on the wrong side of an offside call many times during both halves as the game developed. Rawcliffe’s goal came mid-way through the first half, a set-piece bouncing inside the penalty area and sitting up nicely to be smashed home by the away side’s number 5 – 0-1. The away side remained ahead at the half-time break.
Cliffe were asked to respond early in the second-half, but with a lead to hang onto, Rawcliffe made things hard for Cliffe and defended stubbornly. Ben Olsson impressed once more in the midfield and earn himself man-of-the-match, and Matthew Birch grew into the game at centre-back. In search for the equaliser, Cliffe left themselves open to a counter and Rawcliffe drew a set of good saves from David Laverack in the Cliffe goal. Even with the added time of the referee having to move his car after blocking a convoy of tractors, time ran out for Cliffe and they couldn’t get the equaliser – Rawcliffe won 1-0.
Next week, Cliffe FC first team are fixture-less as Cliffe FC 2ndXI host a in-form Osbaldwick Reserves side.

East Riding County FA – Vice President’s Cup – 3rd Round
HT: 0-1 FT: 1-1
AET: Cliffe FC Sunday 2 – 2 Preston Cock & Bell
Preston win 9-8 on penalties
Cliffe FC Sundays bow out of the County Cup, 2-2 after extra-time, as Preston Cock & Bell win 9-8 on penalties, after a marathon 23 penalty shoot-out.
Cliffe started brightly and took their time to break Preston down, and a defensive error was pounced upon by Aidy Wood – Wood scoring to make it 1-0. Cliffe remained the team on top for much of the first half but weren’t able to extend their lead, a feeling that this may comeback to bite them in the rear later in the tie. The score remained 1-0 at the break.
Cliffe struggled to get going second-half, and a bad spell which saw Preston grow into the game saw the away side draw level – a quick free-kick catching Cliffe switched off to make it 1-1 from close range. Cliffe saw a couple last ditch blocks on the line and challenges keep the score level, Nathan Parker denied a few times. Cliffe nearly scored with the last attack of the 90 minutes but it was denied again by Preston and the game went to extra-time.
Cliffe took the lead early in the first-half, a cross whipped into the box and converted by Parker – a header-slash-faced into the next, Parker’s Movember ‘tash with the assist, 2-1 to Cliffe. Preston responded and got another equaliser before the break, a long throw followed by a looping header than found it’s way into the net at the back post, 2-2. Neither side could get a goal in the second period of extra time, Cliffe again with the final attack before the final whistle – again cleared off the line, 2-2 AET – penalty shoot-out needed.
Cliffe ‘keeper Matty Clark saved the first spot kick, and eventually created three chances for Cliffe to win it, but after 23 penalties, Wood, having scored Cliffe’s first goal and spot-kick, missed the last penalty and Preston progress.
Next Sunday, Cliffe FC Sunday host Beeswing in League Challenge Cup competition.
