Another cup weekend for Cliffe FC this week, again though mixed fortunes – the First Team qualify for the next round of the County Cup with a win at Riccall United Reserves, but the Sundays are outclassed by Dunnington in York FA Cup.

East Riding County FA – Junior Country Cup – 1st Round
FT: Riccall United Reserves 1 – 4 Cliffe FC
Cliffe FC are in the hat for the next round of the County Cup, with a comfortable 4-1 away win at Riccall United Reserves – a great show of character from the whole club after last weekend’s humbling in the FA Cup.
A specific showing of character was involved in the opening pair of goals of the cup tie in the first few minutes, Shane Horner scoring an own-goal to put Riccall ahead – a low driven cross which Horner couldn’t get out the way of having committed to slide on the line, 1-0 – but Horner then raced up the field from the kick-off, dispossessed the Riccall full-back and squared the ball for Luigi Foschi to restore parity at 1-1 – a fantastic response from the youngster to assist the equaliser less than a minute after scoring an own-goal.
From this point on, it was only a matter of time of when Cliffe would go ahead – a Phil Newstead cross headed past the ‘keeper by Andy Edwards to make it 1-2. Riccall did have their best spell after Cliffe went ahead but their biggest threat up front already had been substituted due to injury. Cliffe remained ahead at the break, HT.
Cliffe played the second-half like the first, in a controlled and confident fashion – Kevin Taylor, Newstead and Andy Addison dominating in the midfield and Glynn Richardson impressing, also Scott Jackson with Matt Birch comfortable at the back. A mazing Taylor run lead to Cliffe extending their lead – the ball breaking to Edwards, who smashed the ball home left-footed to make the score 1-3, his second of the game. Cliffe found themselves 4-1 up shortly after, a free-kick scored by James Gallagher – James usually a defender showing shades of his striker younger brother Sean – a tidy right footed finish, 1-4. Cliffe did have a penalty shout turned down, but whilst not scoring any further goals, never looked like conceding again either – 1-4 the final score.
Cliffe FC see their first team qualify a week earlier for the second-round of the County Cup, Saturday’s fixture brought forward due to Ricall not wanting to give up home advantage – Cliffe first team are back in action on 17th October away to Tockwith in Division One.
Next Saturday, Cliffe FC Reserves (serving a free week this week) are back in action and begin their County Cup campaign, away to Skirlaugh Reserves – a former league opponent of Cliffe back in their East Riding County League days in 2007-09.
Sunday 4th October 2015
York FA – Sunday Cup – 1st Round
FT: Cliffe FC Sunday 2 – 13 Dunnington
Not a morning to write home about as Cliffe FC Sundays are outclassed and thrashed by Dunnington, the final score reading 13-2 to the away side, who progress to the next round of the York FA Sunday Cup.
As per the first team’s York FA Cup endeavours, it became a mismatch of sorts between the two teams as higher-division Dunnington raced ahead without reply in the first half. Andy Kirkham scored both Cliffe goals, the only positive for the home side – a lob for his first and then a power header from a superb cross from Keiran Dinsdale. Dunnington racked up more goals and progressed to the next round with a 13-2 win – to end the Cliffe’s FA Cup adventures at the first hurdle, FT.
Next Sunday, Cliffe FC are in League Cup action away to Selby Olympia – where management team Jackson Lucitt and Matt Bitch will be requiring a positive response and result to follow.
