Cliffe 2nd XI put up a spirited display against top of the table opponents, but not for the first time this season a loss of concentration in the final 10 minutes cost them dearly.
Gary Wilson writes…
Visitors Market Weighton started this game with the wind and rain at their backs and had the lion’s share of the possession, but only managed to create a handful of genuine chances due to excellent defending from the home side, with Jamie Hawksworth outstanding in his first game at centre-back.
After kicking against the wind and rain it looked as though Cliffe would get to the break without conceding, but the visitors finally broke the deadlock after 44 minutes when a move down the left allowed an attacker to slot the ball past the keeper.
After the break Cliffe started well and were soon on top of this game, with the visitors now struggling to get the ball out of their own half. After 55 minutes Marcus Ford latched onto a through ball and showed good strength to poke the ball home past the advancing keeper for the equaliser.
Cliffe continued to press for the lead, with chances becoming more frequent, and were rewarded on 70 minutes when Andy Addison shot into the top right hand corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Once they had taken the lead however, Cliffe seemed to lose focus and allowed the visitors back into the game when a shot from the edge of the box went through a crowd of players and into the net.
This equaliser seemed to encourage the visitors as much as it deflated the hosts, and they soon once again had the upper hand, scoring two late goals to seal the victory.
